True Colors

Recently a United States governor, in speaking of the progress his state was making in addressing COVID-19 was very intentional in revealing his true colors. He said: “The number is down because we brought the number down.” And then emphasized: “God did not do that. Faith did not do that. Destiny did not do that. A lot of pain and suffering did that . . . That’s how it works.”

Even putting those words on paper makes me shudder. It’s not enough that we declare alcohol and abortion clinics as being essential to our society. It’s not enough that politicians are more concerned with their private agendas than the good of our nation. It’s not enough that lying in Washington is as normal as breathing and goes unaddressed. It’s not enough that our leaders attempt to put the church on the back burner as if she is an antiquated, out-of-sync-with-reality group. No...flat out borderline blasphemous statements are uttered…and the press lets it slide. And why wouldn’t they. It would require character and understanding drenched in high doses of discernment to see the horror of such a statement.  Good news…the Church saw the horror!

I used to stand back in disbelief when I would read these words in the Book of Revelation, words that followed God’s judgement: “Now the rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands.”  How could people experience God’s judgement and not seek to repent?! And yet that is a repeated theme in Revelation. In today’s practice of deliberately distancing ourselves from God, I see how that can happen.

Listen, I have no idea how this current pandemic fits into the broader scheme of God’s plan. Time will tell. But I do know this is no time to push Him away or ignore His intervention. This is not the time to play the fool.

We need to pray for our leaders that they don’t miss God; that they don’t break their arms patting themselves on the back and forget to praise the King of Kings. They need our prayers and they need the Lord.

What are your true colors? Are you looking for relief or for God? Are you in search of solutions or a Savior? Is getting past the lockdown more important than getting to a point of full surrender to Christ? What are your true colors? I hope your true colors are flying the banner of righteousness given to us by Christ. He needs to be seen!

“He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:8-12
